Broward Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man in Pompano Beach Monday when they said he brandished a gun in front of deputies.

Deputies blocked off the 800 block of Southeast 22nd Avenue just after 6:20 p.m. BSO said deputies said they saw a man with a gun point it at another person standing outside a second floor apartment. The man fired a shot, but didn't hit anyone, BSO said.

"I don't know if he was firing a shot at someone, " Jim Leljedal from the Broward Sheriff's Office said. "Or, just firing a round to let everyone know the gun was real."

As the man descended towards deputies, he ignored their orders to drop the weapon, according to BSO. That's when authorities said they fired.

"One shot and then, after that, boom, boom, boom," one witness said.

It is still unclear who, or if, the suspect was trying to hit someone directly.

"He pointed a gun at a person," Leljedal said. "I don't know if our deputies were in the line of fire or not."

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene. No one else was injured.

Now, they are investigating to sort out exactly what happened.  They have not released any information about who the suspect was.

The deputy who fired the shot will be placed on administrative leave for at least three days, per standard BSO procedure.
